This document summarises the outcome of the Environment Agency charges consultation for:
- all hourly rate charges
- fixed charges for medium combustion plant
- waste exemption registration and compliance charges
We provide an overview of feedback and explain where we have changed our original proposals.
We will implement these charges from 1 July 2025.
Original consultation
Consultation description
This consultation is about the Environment Agency鈥檚 proposed new charges to fund regulatory work targeting waste crime. We also propose new charges for some activities billed on an hourly rate.聽
Proposals include:聽
- waste exemption charges, to help us ensure they are not used for illegal waste activities聽
- a fee for intervention to recover the costs of investigating waste operations and resolving breaches where we suspect a waste operator lacks required authorisation聽
- a waste crime levy of 10% on annual subsistence charges for certain waste permits, to enhance our efforts against waste crime聽
- updated hourly rates that reflect the current costs of managing environmental permits and applying them to new regulatory work聽
