Biography

Ambassador Archie Young is the Interim Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, New York. He was previously appointed Ambassador to the UN General Assembly in January 2024.

He previously served as the UK鈥檚 Lead Climate Negotiator from 2016 to 2022, including leading the negotiations for the UK鈥檚 Presidency of COP26 which saw all 196 countries agree the Glasgow Climate Pact and finalise the Paris Rulebook. During this period he was also Director for International Climate and Energy in BEIS and then Director for Negotiations and Ambition in Cabinet Office.

Prior to this, Archie held several Senior Civil Service roles in London, including Deputy Director Americas in FCDO, Head of the Delivery Unit in the Department of Energy & Climate Change, and Deputy Director for Business, Environment & Olympics in the Prime Minister鈥檚 Delivery Unit.

During a recent sabbatical, he was an M-RCBG Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School and worked with climate philanthropy and multilateral think tanks. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael & St George (CMG) in 2022 for services to tackling global climate change.

The Deputy Permanent Representative is a senior diplomat with the rank of Ambassador, acting as alternate to the Permanent Representative across the full range of UN business. This includes representing the UK in the Security Council and Economic and Social Council, and working on issues such as security and conflict, human rights, sustainable development and climate change. The DPR is also responsible for the daily management of the Mission.
