Driver and Rider Testing statistics
Since December 2024, the Department for Transport (DfT) has discontinued publication of Driver and Rider Testing Statistics and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) have assumed responsibility for producing data on these topics.
DfT previously produced a range of official statistics on behalf of DVSA that covered practical and theory driving tests, numbers of approved driving instructors and other related statistics and published these as official statistics.
In recent years, DVSA had also increasingly begun to release data on these subjects to help inform the public and provide key management information regarding their operations.
The statistics and data being produced by DfT on behalf of DVSA, and increasingly by DVSA themselves, led to duplication and in certain cases significant overlap on prominent topics in the public domain. While the respective datasets were well documented, there was nonetheless the possibility that casual users seeking data could be confused as to why there are different sources of government data on the same topic.
This risk of confusion as well as the overlap in outputs created the potential for conflict with the particular in relation to the pillars of Trustworthiness and Value.Â
Our view is that the DVSA publications suitably replace the Driver and Rider Testing Statistics previously published by DfT, and removal of official statistics status is appropriate given the nature of the information being published. We are therefore undertaking work internally to complete this process. Â
The department is happy to receive user feedback on the above, which should be directed to: vehicles.stats@dft.gov.uk.
Monthly statistical releases
For reasons of brevity, the monthly release of statistics on UK international sea passengers, SPAS0107 and UK Ship Register statistics, FLE0100 are omitted from the list of forthcoming publications. These statistics are usually released on the second Wednesday of each calendar month.
The department monitors transport activity on a timelier basis for topical issues relating to transport. These are also omitted from the list of forthcoming publications as they are published monthly.
- Daily domestic transport use by mode - daily indexed indicators of usage since January 2020
- Developing faster indicators - timely indicators monitoring developing transport-related events
