Travel to Cyprus for work

Check if you need a visa or permit to work in Cyprus and how to get one if you do.

This guide is for British citizens travelling for business or other work purposes. It explains what employers, employees, or the self-employed need to do if they need a visa or permit.

This information is provided as a guide only. You must always check the exact application process and document requirements with the Cypriot embassy or .

Entry requirements

If you鈥檙e going to Cyprus to work (or any other EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein) you must make sure you meet passport and other travel requirements.听

Cyprus is not in the Schengen area. However, if you鈥檙e travelling for business for up to 90 days in a 180-day period, you may be able to do some business-related activities without needing a visa or permit, such as attend business meetings. Cyprus applies a separate 90-day rule.听

If you鈥檙e staying for longer, or for other types of work, you may need a visa or permit.听

The Cypriot authorities are responsible for setting and enforcing entry rules. They decide which activities need a visa or permit, or which may be exempt.听

You must always check with the Cypriot embassy or before you travel, to make sure you meet their legal requirements.听

If you鈥檙e working in more than one country, you need to check the entry rules of each country.听

If you need a passport, visa or permit, you should apply well in advance of travel.听

Visa and permit documents听

This guide explains the general application process for some of the visa or permit types available in Cyprus. It includes a checklist of documents that you鈥檒l usually need to include when applying.听

It may not cover all scenarios so you must always check the exact application process and document requirements with the Cypriot embassy or .听

You must also check what format the documents should be presented in, including if they must be:听

  • 迟谤补苍蝉濒补迟别诲听
  • 鈥榣egalised鈥 (with an apostille) or notarised听
  • originals, or if copies are acceptable听
  • signed in ink (a wet signature), or if they can be signed electronically (an e-signature)听
  • dated within a certain period of time, such as 30 days before you submit your application听

Countries often use the terms visa, work permit and residence permit differently. For example, some may refer to a work permit as a visa.听

This guide uses the same terms used in Cyprus, so you know which ones to use when speaking to Cyprus鈥檚 authorities.听

Check if you need a visa or permit听

Cyprus isn鈥檛 in the Schengen area. The Schengen area countries apply the 90-day visa waiver rule as a group.听

This means if you visit one or more of the Schengen area countries within a 180 day-period, it all counts towards the Schengen 90-day limit.听

Cyprus applies a separate 90-day limit. It doesn鈥檛 apply the 90 days as a group with the Schengen area countries.听

This means you can spend up to 90 days in a 180-day period in other European countries and it won鈥檛 affect how long you can spend in Cyprus. You鈥檒l still be able to stay in Cyprus visa-free for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.听

You do not need a visa or permit if you鈥檙e travelling to Cyprus for up to 90 days in a 180-day period for specific business-related activities. These activities can include:听

  • attending trade fairs, seminars or conventions听
  • attending and speaking at conferences听
  • running or attending job interviews听
  • negotiating, signing or executing deals or contracts听
  • meeting with clients, customers or colleagues听
  • meeting with contractors or vendor听
  • providing and receiving classroom-based or on the job-training听
  • shadowing someone鈥檚 job听
  • fact-finding visits听
  • attending kick-off meetings听
  • attending board meetings听

Border checks听

At the border, you may be asked to show:听

  • proof of return travel, such as plane or train tickets听
  • health insurance that covers your stay听
  • proof of your accommodation for your entire stay听
  • enough money for the duration of your trip听
  • an invitation letter from your employer explaining your trip听

Check Cyprus鈥 exemptions听

Certain types of work and activities in Europe do not require a visa or permit because they鈥檙e exempt.听

All countries have their own exemptions. What may be exempt in one country may not be in another. You should always check with the country鈥檚 authorities.听

The following may not require a visa or permit in Cyprus for up to 90 days in a 180-day period:听

  • those with an EU intra company transfer (EU ICT) permit or EU Blue Card from another country听

Further checks听
